They discovered the son had a congenital heart defect, carried by the mother's side of the family, and would need a heart transplant to survive. His father decided to donate his heart to his son, since he would be technically dead the next day anyway (back in his coma). He committed suicide while House and the other doctor created an alibi in the casino (so no one would suspect they were aware of the plan). They were then able to perform the transplant.
