Here it is: My friend, Dylan asked our science teacher today, "If a Turtle fell on it's back, would it be able to turn back over on it's own? How long would it take?"
Thean our teacher said, "I've wondered that, too."

That's my question: Would they be able to turn back over on it's own and how long would it take?

It depends. Some turtles can flip themselves back over, others can't. The time it takes them depends as well....usually a few minutes at the most...and as I've said some can't do it and will die.

I have a painted turtle that has flipped over from lying on its back...it can do it in a matter of seconds.

Yes, they can turn over by themselves. Turtles have very long necks and use there nose to turn over, It usually only takes a few seconds.

I think most turtles can, but it would probably depend on how big they are and how deep the shell is. Smaller varieties can do that for sure, but I'm not sure about the bigger ones.

A tortoise, on the other hand...hm, maybe they can, but it would take a lot longer. Their shells are heavier and deeper.

Good question why don't you post this same question on these sites: nationalgeographic.com and the Library of Congress' website at: loc.gov and see what interesting answers you will get back.
