I am interested in seeking membership of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. I've been told that I should have a decent knowledge of the sorority's history before approaching one of the sorors. Is there any recommend source for non-members seeking to become members? So far, I have been told to try to find "Past is Prologue" by Marjorie Parker... Members, please advise! Thanks.

Hello,

I am a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. The very first place that you should go for information regarding the sorority is to our national website: www.aka1908.com

There you will find basic foundational information on which the sorority stands.

Secondly, regarding your attempts to obtain a copy of the Past is Prologue...that is a book that is handed out to members during MIP. You can't just go to a bookstore and purchase it. Many sorors would view your attempt to purchase the book as DISRESPECTFUL!!!!!! So please keep that in mind.

There is also a book called The Divine Nine in which you can get some good information.

If there is any further information that I can give you some guidance on, please feel free to email me.

The national headquaters in in Chicago, IL near hyde park. So if your in Chicago or close by you can stop by there. They should have plenty of references on the history. If you are further away you can inquire with the local graduate chapter for mentors into the greek life.

Be sure of what your life goals are. Unfortunately, I know of some who had to exchange two letters for three. That is, they had to let their dreams of of being a doctor or lawyer because their grades completely deteriorated during their pledging process. Not saying this is the way at all chapters but you should do some subtle investigation.

The first start would be the official AKA website and then Wikipedia and the net. There's only so much info a nonmember can learn/know. But this can get you in the door. Good luck.
