I wan't to be a journalist, but none of the colleges around here offer journalism. Instead I may go for my B.A. in English instead. Is it possible to start a career in journalism with an BA in Enlgish?

Also, if journalism does not work out what careers could I fall back on? Perhaps teach English or something?

Thank you Sophist. I really enjoy both, and I actually came out of a Criminal Justice major because that is not what I wanted to be. Since I was 13 years old I dreamed of being a journalist, reading every biography, and journalism book is out there. I would be quite satisfied with an Enlgish degree, but would prefer a journalism degree.

It is absolutely possible to start a career in journalism with a degree in English. There are several advantages: English curriculum teaches research, not just interviewing. Then there's the grammar training...

But choose the major you want. Learn what you'd like to learn. Careers come after graduation. Enjoy learning and make the most of it!

I think you can get into Journalism with a degree in English (that would fall under "related degree").
With the way technology is these days you should take some graphic design classes to go with the degree.

If you think you might want to teach English (in case you don't get a Journalism job right off) minor in Education so you can walk right into a teaching position rather than having to take additional courses.

Also, if you are thinking of a specific type of job in journalism you want eventually, like magazine editor or field reporter for a newspaper, go to Monster Jobs and type in Journalism or the job title and see what comes up. You can see what the pay is, who's hiring for that type of work and what type of education and skills they are seeking.
You might see a common thread and know you need to have x courses.

Good Luck to you!

You would be better off not thinking about your intended college major as having something specifically to do with your future career. You can do just about anything with an English degree--if you have a brain and a personality. Study and learn about what you enjoy--not what you think will give you a good career. For journalism, you could look into media studies programs as well.
