Hi there. We gave cord blood with our first baby. IT sounded like a good idea. It was a good feeling knowing that you were doing something good for either your future children or someone's who may be a match and may need it. It was simple procedure, I was still under my epidural, didn't feel a thing. It's more of a personal decision.

For most people, banking cord blood is an unnecessary expense (since you'll likely never need the blood).
However, if you're part of a minority group that is difficult to match, tissue-wise, you might be accepted into a program that collects cord blood for free. (It goes into a bank, like a blood bank, to help people who need it. There's no guarantee that YOU will get it. And these programs are very regional; there may not be one in your area.)
And if you have a family history of an illness that may be treated or cured using cord blood, you should look into it.
For the rest of us, though, there's no need. It's just preying on new parents' natural fears.

We didn't bank our children's blood when they were born, but we did donate their cord blood to a cancer facility that used cord blood for bone marrow transplants. It is not harmful to your baby to collect cord blood as it comes from the cord, after it has been cut, from the both of you. Look on line for cordblood banks. They will send you all the information you need to make the right decision for you.

I beg everyone to do it. My daughters umbilical cords were so tangled they couldnt use the blood and the oldest twin suffered brain damage from lack of oxygen due to the entanglement. I was told had we been able to get the blood and stem cells she could have used it to help repair parts of her brain and possibly gain some function back. Dont think "It can never happen to me" save the blood if you can, its well worth the price. Price is nothing when you are raising a disabled child, you would give any amount of money to help them

I would have donated the blood if I was able to, but I would never spend that kind of money just for "in case" situations that would require such blood. I think most people think it's a great idea until they see the price tag.

i didn't do that with my sons, but the bank is a very good idea..that way, if something happens to your child, you can use that for a cure

I think it's a good idea, if you can afford it. I have heard it's fairly pricey.
