Purple was the color of Royalty and during Roman times, only the Emperor was allowed to wear purple (I believe); since Purple at the time could only be developed by the smashing the shells of a specific type of sea snail, thereby, indicating it's difficulty and rarity in ancient Rome. Subsequently, thru the ages, most past civilizations, purple was reserved for nobels and royals due to the difficulty in creating the dyes necessary to color a garment. Purple thus denotes a luxurious connotation and in modren times the outlook for purpleish clothes borders on the flamboyant. Fun question!
