According to the songwriting credits on Des'ree's "I Ain't Movin" album, "You Gotta Be" was written by Des'ree and Ashley Ingram. A note on the album says "Each day I rise and the light of day kisses my face. I know deep down inside that my heart cannot remain this peaceful because I have to face the world. I have to wear different faces at different times. In order to be heard - You Gotta Be. In order to hold on - You Gotta Be. In order to fight - You Gotta Be. In order to win - You Gotta Be. I affirm and believe".
