I strongly disagree. Welfare programs (for SMALL business owners and people living in poverty) help to level the playing field against the corporate monoliths who carelessly more forward for their own gain.
This nation is built on the American dream. Welfare helps to keep that dream alive, and I wouldn't be able to call myself an American if I tried to shake a fellow American from his peaceful slumber.
God Bless,
Tofu
PS- The handouts to those who don't have a job, however, are an element that have already been deleted in more welfare reform movements. It started in my homestate of Wisconsin with our governor Tommy Tompson. So don't worry, the bums don't get their checks, only the parents of four trying to survive on minimum wage.

Why not ask people with cancer or people waiting for heart transplants. how about asking people with Mental disabilities?
OR ask an elderly person that earned the money buy working their entire lives at suck a** jobs with no pensions. While your asking this question ask yourself what happens if you get hit in a car accident and can no longer work because you've been made a vegetable by your neighborhood Republican Drunk?
You've asked a question that needs to be qualified with some logical social needs in mind.
Don't reward the "Lazy people" with Welfare or the over indulging corporate leadership with bandaids. But Don't forget those people with real problems that need help. If your too good to help the infirmed, mentally disabled or elderly then your too good to take the help when you need it.
The US happens to be built on the premise that All men are Equal. Maybe you people that think your above the rest of us work-a-day joes Should move the hell out!
How about the day you, see your mother or father begging for food in the street?
The day you, get crushed in a car wreck?
The day you, have your home taken away because you can't afford your medical bills?
The Day You! Oh holy conservative Intellectuals. Have to watch your Autistic child be Destroyed because you Pinheads took any chance of life away by Removing Welfare!

Welfare didn't exist in this country until late in the 20th century. And what has it produced? An entitlement mindset and generations of families that are always on welfare. Prior to welfare, it was charitable organizations that fed, clothed and housed the poor. In the process they also focused on making these individuals better people, more responsible, more educated, more determined to succeed. Today's solution of handing a government check to someone does none of that. I don't think it can be argued that our government does a better job of caring for the poor today than the Salvation Army, churches, and the numerous other charitable organizations did for the first 150 years of our country's existence.
Regarding corporate welfare, that should also cease. Corporations are most successful when they are forced to compete on a fair and level playing field. Government subsidies to prop-up or artificially maintain domestic industries is foolish.
The only exception to this would be government subsidies for cutting edge research and development. The capital costs of some new technologies are so prohibitive that innovation wouldn't occur unless the government was willing to promote the research into these new technologies. However, the money for this research needs to be spread around all players in the industry and not to the cronies of whoever currently controls congress.

I wish Ithey could. That way rich people can't get their hands on them nor corporations can either. It was meant for the poor, and those that need government assistant to get back on their feet. I'm tired of hearing complains about how the government are handing out money to some citizens for free, yet, what they don't know is that the rich also find ways to get their hands on it too. It's sick, sad, and but true.

Yes we should - as it exists now.
Social Welfare should exist to help people for 6 months ONLY. ANYONE can run into bad luck and I do not mind helping short term. I do not like generational welfare that I see in the inner cities.
Business - I do not want to subsidize farmers NOT to grow or pay an airline that expanded too fast and is bloated. MAYBE a small loan but NOT subsidies.

No. Maybe you don't hear sensationalized stories about people who use welfare responsibly and wisely to better their situations and provide for their families, but they're out there. Plenty of people genuinely need welfare.
Should we be more cautious about who receives welfare, and follow up closely to make sure it's being used appropriately? Yes. But to discontinue it altogether would be absurd.
I am generally socially conservative, but I've seen and known many people personally who used welfare to get themselves out of dire situations. People like the previous answerer who say "If you don't work you can starve" are hateful and will have to answer to God for that incredibly negative attitude. If you consider yourself a Christian, than it is your duty to care for the least of these... orphans, widows, and those who cannot help themselves.

I sort of agree to a small percentage (it needs to be revamped), but its a shame when the ones that truly need it and depend on it suffer for all the ones that are abusing the system. I have encountered needy families, and I see how they struggle, and it pisses me off all the ones that are on it and don't deserve it.
