If you made a reservation at a hotel you will need photo ID. Most hotels on the strip require you to be 21 so the ID gives them that information. Your friends do not necessarily need to bring photo ID, but they will probably ask for photo ID when drinking or gambling depending on if you look 40 or not.

The only way you can get out of not having a photo ID when checking into a hotel is if you don't have a reservation and plan on paying completely in cash which requires you to pay the full amount of the room up front plus a deposit.

Yes, you definitely need a photo ID to check into any hotel in Las Vegas. I work in a hotel and no one is allowed to check in without one. Some hotels require credit cards to check in, but others will take a cash deposit for the room/tax and incidental charges. You will only need the ID of the person checking into the room, not your friends

Whomever is checking in needs the ID, and the credit card used to reserve the room - and the names should be the same on both.

At the Borgata hotel in Atlantic City, NJ, everyone occupying the room has to show ID at check-in. I'm not sure of the Las Vegas policies - I haven't been there in a few years.

It's always good to have some kind of ID with you, especially photo ID, i'd bring it just in case.
