I am engaged to a man from Ghana (I am from the USA). I will be returning to Ghana next month and we are planning to marry in Ghana, late Dec/early Jan. I will be spending about two months there, then we both plan to move back here. My question is, what is the immigration process like? He does not have a visa yet, and I want to know what we have to do to get this. What is the process like and what financial requirements are there? Thank you for your help.

If you are an American citizen you have two ways to bring your foreign spouse (husband or wife) to the United States to live. They are:

* Immigrant visa for a Spouse of a U.S. Citizen (IR1 or CR1) - An immigrant Petition for Alien Relative, Form I-130 is required.

* Nonimmigrant visa for spouse (K-3) - It is important to note that application for the nonimmigrant visa for spouse (K-3) who married a U.S. citizen must be filed and the visa must be issued in the country where the marriage took place. After the visa process has been completed, and the visa is issued, the spouse can travel to the United States to wait for the processing of the immigrant visa case.

Well, two things you should do, to get married there or in the United States, If you get married there, then bring marriage certificate back to US, and file I-130 (Petition for Relative). and wait for the Approval, or you must be a US citizen and file I-129F (Fiancee) and wait for approval then ask your fiancee to go to the US Embassy where your fiancee lives to apply for US visa (with the Fiancee status), and you have to file (I-134 affidavit of support) that means you must have enough financial proof to support your fiancee, after the US approves the visa, your fiancee can come to US and get married within 30 days, then more paper-works will need to submit before your husband can be completed to earn a green card (permanent resident). Good luck.

My husband tried to get me into the USA he's a citizen and I'm British. Not only is it a VERY costly business it takes a lot of time too. In the end we gave up, we simply did not have the money. He came to the UK to live instead and hes been here ever since and now is a resident.
I wish you lots of luck, you are sure gonna need it and a healthy bank balance too!
