Anything can be real depending on if you believe it or not... She may or may not believe that she was under as spell. She may just be saying that to help with her insanity plea??? Who knows.
The power something has is your belief in it.

These are all different things.
Witchcraft, painfully misunderstood and associated with "halloween" and "the devil," in this day and age, is something that has been around for ages. The "wicce" in the British Isles meant "learned" or "wise one" and the celts were fond of using magic. Druids and wise women were revered. It was Christianity fearing the difficulty of converting the devout Pagans, that came up with the idea of it being evil. They portrayed Pagan women as old and withered, which basically gives us the green skinned, cackling hag that we picture today.
Voodoo, or Vodou or Vodoun, is a religion widely practiced in Haiti, that has roots in Black African (by which I mean, non-Middle Eastern Africa) spirituality. There is a lot of making offerings to spirits, and rhythm, music and dancing is a huge part in its ritual. Unfortunately, most people just associate it with the infamous voodoo doll.
Santeria is a combination or Vodou and Catholicism, which is probably the result of the Spanish Explorers trying to convert African slaves in the Caribbean, and meeting only half way. This I don't know much about, except that it certainly has gotten a bad name. There is a lot of venerating saints the way spirits are venerated in Vodou, and a lot of offerings, unsurprisingly, since both root religions are heavy on personal sacrifice and symbolism.
To believe any of these systems is not so much a matter of "is it real," rather than "Is this what my heart says is so?" It's the same as asking "Is Judaism/Christianity/Islam/etc real?"
I hope that helps :)

I practice Vodou. We don't curse people and send demons to possess them. This is not part of the religion. Vodou is not just about magic. We believe in God (Bondye), we honor our ancestors, and we serve the lwa (elevated spirits). Our magic is mainly healing, and helping people. Not just those in the humfort but the whole community. Magic is done by using packets, bouteys, which are filled with herbs and others things to help bring about the desired effect. We also ask the lwa to help us with what we need.
I believe that lady was just saying that so she did not have to go to jail and instead end up at a mental institution. She is using the unknown as a scapegoat for her crime. She should go to jail or face the death penalty for killing a child.

Witchcraft, Voodoo, & Santeria are real.
They are Religions and they are also systems of Magick.
Negative entities (demons) are real as well... BUT
very very rarely do these meet, except when a practitioner of Witchcraft (etc.) is trying to RID someone or someplace of negativity.
This woman was using possession as an excuse in all likelyhood, else she believes it, but it crazy.

The story may well be truthful, if that's what your asking. Enough people believe in such things for Chicago to have more than one religious goods store with Santeria candles in it, and apparently enough people believed in such things as recently as the 1950's to make Maya Deren's The Divine Horsemen something of a near best-seller.

Voodoo is very real I am afraid. I really don't know a lot about it but I do know that my home was possibly used for this purpose in the past and this weekend we are having it cleansed by a paranormal team.

I believe in the word of God. Jesus healed people who were possessed by devils. Yes some people are evil, and do practice withcraft. It's a terrible thing, but God is in control. Some people do try to put spells on people, and they will give an account to God. I don't know what happened in that particular situation. But God and the devil are real. Some people don't believe in spirits, but it's true.
Yes it could be possible that's what happened. I am saved and believe in the whole Bible. Some people say they believe in the Bible, but they don't believe that evil spirits will try to control people. But Jesus did heal people tormented by the devil.
You cannot let anyone even lay hands on you, because you have to discern what spirit they are operating under.

demon possesion is very real. it does happen. Voodoo is very real..as is witchcraft. Most people believe and practice these things in the manner in which they were intended. Of course, you have some that think its evil and cool and mess around when they shouldn';t or they aren't educated enough in the area of those practices....thats when evil things happen.

I believe in them but they only have power over you if you let them or have been drugged. A lot of people use possession by demons and whatnot as an excuse though. Gives those of us who take it seriously a bad name.
