In six days, my high school band is going to Chicago to be in the thanksgiving parade. We're going to be sight seeing and for some weird reason, everyone is saying how bad our accents and the way we talk are going to sound (we're from southern TX). Everyone is saying how y'all don't say "y'all". Instead it's "you guys" or whatever. Is that true? and if it is, what are some other differences between how y'all talk and we do?

We Chicagoans do not use the term "y'all" in ordinary conversation, you will certainly stand out if you do. It is not fair and not nice but many northerners look down on all southerners dumb and backwards. If you want to blend you should try to tone down your twang. I still remember I had a college professor who began the first day of class with the usual introductions etc. She then said "If you haven't already noticed, I am from Texas. Keep in mind I think y'all talk funny". "You guys" is common Chicagoese when talking to a group of people, even a group of women.

In Chicago we call fizzy soft drinks "pop" as opposed to "soda". We drive on "highways" as opposed to "freeways". We have a light rail public transportation system commonly known as "The L" which is short for elevated even though parts of "The L" actually run underground. Chicago has two airports, the are known as "O'Hare" and "Midway".

I am sure there are many more local customs that I am so used to I don't even think about.

Hope this helps.

Yes, Chicago people don't say y'all most of the us don't say that just the south. I'm from Chicago, later I live in the south for 6 yrs and picked up some southern words. Don't worry about what other people think. Please have fun, eats some Chicago pizza, Chicago hot dogs and enjoy the best malls. Just arrive with winter clothes, it's the windy city!!

Youse will like da great city of Chicago, city of da big shoulders and home to a wide variety of nationalities. You'll hear Polish dialects, Italian dialects, yiddish dialects, and your basic ebonics.

Dont worry about da dialect, Chicago welcomes all. Just root for da bears while you're dere...

...and no one gets hurt. ;-)

Wear your long johns while parading, it gets colder than a whores heart on dem streets on Thanksgiving wid da wind blowin' between them buildings.

If you have accent there's probably no getting rid of that, but if you just say "yall" you could try to cut down on that, like how some people try to stop saying "like"

Lots of people I know think that people saying "yall" is really cool and cute.
