Oil- not Crisco. It will not become a solid.

Will it hurt the environment if I dump it down the drain?

I'm not sure how it is in your town, but here I put the used oil in the original container and put it into our trash. Small household amounts are allowed to put into the trash as long as they are in sealed plastic containers.
You can also ask your local restaurant/pizzaria if you can put your used oil in their grease bin.

Since you are in an apartment, I would assume you don't have a compost pile or an area that has a lot of earthworms, because vegetable oil can be added to a compost heap, or spread in your yard if there is a large earthworm population.

We live in an apartment too. We run the faucet with VERY VERY HOT WATER. Slowly pour down drain while water is running. After all oil is poured, let water run for at least one minute. It will not hurt the evironment because it is going into the septic tank. We have lived here and been doing it for 5 years. We haven't had any problems with clogged drain or backed up septic tank. Or you can take it to your local "Dump"/Refuse Center. Most of them have oil containers where you can get rid of your oil. Hope this answer helps. P.S. Too much fried food is bad for you - LOL - But, I know...it tastes so good!

Let the oil go cold.
Pour it into a plastic container with a screw top. You could keep the original container for this purpose or you could use something like an empty laundry detergent bottle.
Screw on the top.
Put the filled container in the trash.
Do NOT put the oil into the drain.

I have emptied the new oil into a bowl or pan. Then I drain the old oil into the bottle. Put the old oil out with the trash and pour the new oil in the fryer.

Probably the best way to get rid of used oil is put it in a container with a lid and then put it in a plastic bag and throw it in the dumpster. Don't put that much oil down your drain because you will clog it.

Do not put it down the drain. Call your local trash company, they will tell you where to take it to dispose of it. It is not good for your drains, one, plus it is not good for your sewage plant or anything in between. The water you put down the drains is cleaned up and eventually returns to some one's faucet, so it is important that we don't challenge the ability of cleaning it up. That which the water treatment plant can not clean up is still moved on down the system where it is diluted by other waters and as we can see now the water in our lakes and streams simply isn't as clean as it use to be.

I think it is great that you are concerned. I hope your trash company makes it easy for you to dispose of it.

I pour my used oil in an empty can--then put in fridge to make hard and then put out with the trash...you may need to use an empty gallon milk jug due to the large quantity (obviously only when no longer hot)--hope that helps

Don't put it in your drain, it will cause clogging. I keep jars, coffee cans, butter bowls, etc. for disposing of oil. When I need to get rid of it, I pour it into these saved containers and put it in the garbage. It works well for me.

don't dump it down the drain -- it will cause sewage problems. what my mom does is put it back into a large gallon container - original or milk carton and throws it out in the trash.

Check around (ask family, friends, etc.) and see if your city has a recycling center that takes used car oil. You could also ask a local shop what they do with their used oil. Heck, maybe they'll be nice and take it off your hands for a dollar or two.
