A lottery is where all teams are put in the "lottery" to decide the order of the picks...Some teams get their name put in the drawing multiple times based on their last year's preformance.
A regular pick is just the worst team from the last year picks first, and the best team picks last.

All of the worst teams are ranked whoever is the worst gets the most balls with their team on it put into a big lottery ball picker. The worst team has the most chances to win the #1 pick in the draft. Then the next worst team has the second most balls put in and so on and so forth. Then on the lottery day each of the worst team sends a rep. to be there for the lottery and hope they get the # 1 pick. So the worst teams are the "lottery" teams and they get the best shot at drafting early. A regular pick is just any pick by any team. I hope this helps!

Lottery picks are usually the first 3 picks in the NBA draft. (But they consider the first 13 picks to be lottery selections)
The 14 teams who didn't make it to the NBA playoffs are given a certain number of ping-pong balls with those that have the worst win-loss record having the best chance to get the first pick. Once the three ping-pong balls are selected (if a team were to be drawn twice, it would be returned and the process would be done again), the remaining teams selections are based on their win-loss record--these become the regular picks and they extend to the second round.
There are a total of 60 players that are currently drafted into the NBA every year.
Hope this helps.

Yes the lottery is made up of the teams that did not make the playoffs. Each team that didn't make it get's a certain amount of chances (odds) based on who had the WORST record. So a team that just barely missed the playoffs will have a lower chance of getting the number one pick vs the team that had the worst record (lottery) Just because you had the worst record does not mean you will get the number one pick like in football.

wow everyones answers are way off base the lottery is designed to give teams with the worst records the best shot at getting the overall number one pick so based on last years records the team with the worst record gets the most ball and the higher chance of getting the number one pick only the top three picks are actually determined by the lottery system after 1-3 have been decided the fourth pick goes to the team with the worst record from last year ( who didn't get one of the first three picks) and so on to number 13 after that then the prest of the picks are determined by records from last year with all the other teams(the playoff teams) with the champion getting the last pick of the first round and so on. so even though the lottery is designed to give the worst record team from last year the best chance for the number one pick the lotter drawing only deterines the top three picks not all 13 lottery picks

Their are 13 lottery picks and the 13 worst records are guaranteed one of the first thirteen piks if they dont trade them away, It is not like football where the worst team gets 1st pik. But the worst team does get the most you could say lottery balls, then the 2nd would get 2nd most balls, all the way to the 13th barely having a chance of getting a top pik. Then Regular Picks are 14 to the end.

Lottery Pick is like picks 1-10. Those picks are like picks for teams that didn't make the playoffs.

A lottery is held for the bottom 12 teams in which balls are selected for draft order. And the other teams just draft in order of play off finish.

the teams that DON'T make the play offs get put into a lottery like a ( basket ) and picked out to see how has the 1st overall pick, after the order is set then the teams from the playoff get in order from worst to champs in that order, after lottery is set every one has a pick ( regular )
I hope I explained it well
