The easiest way is to find the GCF of the numerator and denominator. And then divide the numeator and denominator by the GCF and write the quotient s as the new numerator and denominator.

Start by putting the fraction into the form M / N where both M and N are integers (how to do that is left as an exercise). Once the fraction is in the form M / N, devide both M and N by the GCF (Greatest common factor). You can get the greatest common factor by reducing each of the integers to its component factors. For example, 120 / 500. 120 is 2 * 2 * 2 * 3 * 5. 500 is 2 * 2 * 5 * 5 * 5. The common factors for both 120 and 500 are 2 * 2 * 5 or 20. Divide top and bottom by 20 to get 6 / 25.
Some textbooks and teachers require converting a fraction like 3/2 to 1 1/2. Personally, I think 3/2 is easier to think about than 1 and 1/2.
Best lesson you can learn is to do it like the teacher wants, regardless of any other advice.

find a common number that divides into the numerator (top) and denominator (bottom) and then divide both by that number
example:
4/10
the number 2 can go into both of those
4 divided by 2 is 2 and 10 divided by 2 is 5. So...
the answer is 2/5
