I have recently started to Cox for my universitys A10 novince rowing team. I have never doing any kind of rowing or coxing in my life, i'm 2 weeks into it and I have gotten decent at stearing and conducting pratices.

We have a race agenist another school on saturday, anyone have any good phrases I can yell to motivate my boys?

(Currently all I know are Power 10's and just being like "good job boys keep it up")

------------------------------...

Also if during pratice if you have any funny sexual coxwain calls such as, "Give it to me Harder! Much Harder, or Really drive it in!" Could you give them to me cause I like give my boys something to laugh about during are 3 hour pratices in the cold...

any suggestions are good.

I rowed in college and I had coxs who ranged from those that were encouraging and supportive to ones that swore and yelled at us. Both got the job done in the end though. :)

I haven't rowed in years due to a shoulder injury. Not all of these are motivational, but let me see what I can remember that might be useful...

- "Keep it long and strong" (that might qualify for the "sexual" connotation you are looking for)

- "Stand on those footstretchers!!!"

- We were often reminded to "Keep smiling". Apparently, some people will continue to try to breath through their noses. Rowers need more oxygen than that so "smiling" keeps your mouth open.

- When you are moving past another boat you are racing, you are said to be "walking" on them. We often heard "Let's take/go for a walk" if we were not making enough progress or passing them fast enough. Plus, our cox would say things like "okay, now give me seat_#" as we walked past the other boat.

- If you want them to pick up their stroke-rating, you can say something like "give me two in two...one...two" which would mean you want them to increase their speed by two strokes-per-minute in two strokes time.

- Since they are novices, you might find that they are rushing their slides. You can remind them to have "fast hands, slow slide"

- We called the tools used to tighten and adjust the footstretchers "woodies" which was good for an occasional laugh if someone asked for it suggestively (we were a bunch of college girls, go figure). Not motivational, but somewhat amusing.

- During races or pieces, as a rower, it's always nice to know the boat's progress. During a race, I was too busy pulling water to notice where we were on the river (if I knew the course). For example, let them know they are half-way through.

My only other advice is to take care of your voice. My novice cox ended up with callouses on her vocal chords from all the yelling and screaming she did at us. When she went home after her first year of coxing, her friends didn't even recognize her voice. And conversely, when she came back from a summer off from coxing, we didn't recognize her voice since the callouses had started to go away.

I don't know if these will be of any help, but good luck!

I have been Coxing for 3 years, and i found the following site really usefull!

Also use your calls to catch the rythmn of the stroke. So for a long, slower stoke say something like, hooold..... it there,
or for a faster stoke something shorter like,
squeeze, or spin

if the rowers aren't together, calling catches might help. -my favorite is "step" at the catch and "swing" at the finish. -you can also just say "catch... finish" -or my team really likes "POP" at the catch and "chaaa" during the recovery other random things to say: -"jump on that catch" -"power in the drive" -"keep your chins up and eyes straight ahead" if you notice people drifting -not only power tens but tens for focus, or glide, or breathing, or for different pairs in the boat. honestly though, i don't even notice what my coxin says during races, but she keeps talking and that helps me focus. so just pretty much anything that comes out of your mouth is probably good.
