Preacher: god loves a trier. Dont you know anything about the good book and its history? many of your holidays and celebrations fall on pagan days, and the pagan ones are older. If you only look at the sky, you will fall over the ground at your feet... open your eyes. the devil is never any more real than when he is preaching deception to the faithful. your bible is the devil if you are looking for a driving force of oppression and conflict. more people die from religious fanaticism than drug abuse. get a life that isnt narrowed with one eye blind.
now my response to the Q:
The mythology of the greeks and romans holds morals and lessons, in layers beneath the obvious text. you have to read between the lines. it is not literal. the bible isnt either. it is poetry and morality, not fact word for word. they have all the emotions, all the dreams, and all the evils that man can create, and solutions and warnings for mankind.
just like the story of the boy who cried wolf. it is the moral to the story that is important, not its fiction or fact.
the history of Rome is great and is the backbone to the system we have today, economy and politics evolved from their histories, and are an interesting study. The roman catholic church controlled much of the world with overt power too (preacher, are you getting this?) so its validity as a study topic is historical necessity. it is good to see the past. even if it goes against your belief system. looking into the past can open your eyes to brainwashing as well.
but remember: the winners write the history you read. so be objective to everything you get taught in life. question everything.
All cultures have history, (Preacher) does that make all history and mythology evil? no. without the past, we have no future.

It is to really shed more light on the ancient culture of the Romans and the Greeks, and how theyre lives were lived. If we did not know who Athena was or any other gods then the children would not know what the Roman temples were for, and maybe would think they were like Buddist or Christian. Its really just to shed light on the ancient culture, not to convert them.
Also I saw a commebnt about Christianity being taught in schools, most of those children came from a Christian background, and it is taught in school, when they talk about Creation or Evolution.

they are not coaching Evolution and Mythology in an identical classification. Evolution is technology, identity isn't. smart layout/creation could pass in the Mythology classification, suited alongside with the Greek/Roman/Egyptian creation myths. specific, i think of they could practice approximately Christianity/Judaism/Islam alongside with the mythology, so as that the scholars can see that there is rather no distinction between them.

Why shouldn't you? Greece and Rome are the single most influential cultures in history. We have taken just about everything they did and used it ourselves.
It's important to learn about them, their customs, beliefs, and the way they did things. Otherwise, how are you ever supposed to learn from the past and not make the same mistakes?

It is an important part of human cultural history, politics and art, and still quite influential in those fields today. And it is not sold to the kids as truth.

because greeks have many philsophers that have come up with things eg-the pulley and lever-socrates and they had many advancements during these times. wether in art, literature, science, medical or philsophy they all made advancements.
And also due to cultural diffusion which is when one culture changes or creates something in likeness to another's culture. And centralization and decentralization.
