I have inspected the hoses under my sink and usually the drain hose from the dishwasher goes to the disposal and "T's" off to the air gap, emptying out the air gap into the sink only if there is a blockage. It looks like the drain hose from the dishwasher goes directly to the air gap on the sink and bypasses the disposal completely. I am trying to save a poor family member from having to call a plumber for $300, can someone help me out??

The proper way to run the drain hose is to the air gap and then to the disposal. If you are getting water spraying out of the air gap the air gap or the hose from the air gap to the disposal or the disposal itself is blocked. Take the drain hose off the air gap and remove the hose going to the disposal from both ends and check the tail piece on the disposal for blockage and remove the air gap from the sink and clean it out. With everything cleaned out it should drain properly without any spraying from the air gap.

The proper way the dishwasher should drain is go to the air gap first....then there should be a second hose that goes from the air gap to the disposal or branch tailpiece if there is no disposal.....if you are gettin water from the air gap on top of the sink you may have a blockage in the hose that goes from the gap to the disposal or the sink is stopped up.....I'm assuming since you mentioned nothing about the sink being stopped up then the clog is in that second hose....check there first....it happens often....if that's not the case then try a new air gap! good luck

The drain gap is still plugged. There are 2 lines hooked up to it; one to the dishwasher and the other to the sink drain or disposal. It's the second one that's plugged. Did you get a new disposal recently? Maybe the knock-out plug for the disposal's dishwasher connection wasn't um, knocked out or the loose piece or dishwasher crud is still in there blocking the port.

Is it a newly installed dishwasher where the hoses could be hooked up wrong? Make sure your sink is cleared. Like the garbage disposal especially. That has happened to me before.

It shouldn't drain through the air gap, it should go to the disposal. Go ahead and reroute the line for the family.
