Many American bands suck because many Americans enjoy listening to crap (see Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson). True music lovers don't compartmentalize the origin of good music or try to limit it to a single geographical region.

The bands on our side of the pond aren't necessarily rubbish, it's more a matter of the best bands not getting exposure because the music industry here is so stifling - any hint of originality or independent thought is reason enough for a record label to refuse to sign an artist ("we can't sell this, it doesn't sound like anything else" or "this guy's difficult, he wants to do it his way") - added to which the radio market is now controlled by a handful of powerful programmers, ensuring that commercial pablum is the only music most people ever hear - and you're an extra two or three steps removed from us.

Erm...some of the best US bands have been ripped off by the Brits. Case in point: Sex Pistols. Malcolm McClaren went to New York, saw a good thing in their vibrant punk scene, went home and ripped it off for the sole purpose of making money.
So let me see, you're disregarding Blondie, The Ramones, The Doors, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers (pre-1992), Frank Zappa, Motley Crue, Metallica, Megadeth, Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana, Janes Addiction, Soundagarden, Guns 'N' Roses AND the Starland Vocal Band?
Shame on you.

I'm a brit and i dont really think that race affects music. Music is pretty much a universal language...anyway, the americans invented blues (or at least the afro-americans' ancestry did), rock and roll, probably punk (it's debatable whether the ramones or the pistols founded it), and hip-hop, to name a few. They have also been the originators of many existing sub-genres and musical cross-overs too (ie rap-metal). Bit of a sweeping statement there mate ha ha

ALL English bands from the 60s and 70s will tell you the ONE reason they became musicians = Elvis Presley! Yep, an American! Even the members of The Beatles will tell you this is their reason for being. If I'm wrong you can buy me lunch ;-)
Being an American, I must say my favorite ALL-Time band is Electric Light Orchestra from Birmingham, England! They are MY reason for being...lol Queen is another big fave of mine and they're from over there as well. I think you Brits are influenced by a LOT of American music. But instead of copying it (like us americans do) you guys turn it into something more bluesy and forward moving. You guys even gave 'disco' the blues treatment, which was good! :-)

I love British bands but I love American bands too. After all, besides The Who and The Rolling Stones we have bands like Busted, All Saints, Daniel Bedingfield, The Spice Girls and more recently Lady (makes me want to move to a third world country with no electricity just to stop the crap entering my ears) Sovereign.
Have a good day x

Well the way I see it, every place has good bands and bad bands. It is a matter of choice for each individual. Just because you think so, doesn't make it true. Sorry for telling the truth. But one must always tell the truth.
