Below is a site that discusses several possible locations for Springfield. You can take a look and make up your own opinion. Personally, I'm going with Missouri, despite the facts to the contrary :)

It's never been established. In one episode, a parody of the VH1 "Behind the Music" programs, the narrator, referring to the Simpsons, said "This Kentucky family". There is a Springfield in Kentucky. When the episode was repeated, the narration had been changed to "This Missouri family". There is, of course, a Springfield in Missouri as well. Creator Matt Groening admitted he was having fun with the audience by making them think the mysterious location of the SImpsons' Springfield had finally been revealed.

Not Illinois.
I believe a map once showed it in the mid-West, but some episodes made it seem like it was near the ocean. The NYC-themed episode also made allusions that Springfield wasn't that far away, while a summer-themed episode made it seem like Springfield was close to Oregon.
Simply put, none. That's the joke, like everyone has said. It was like calling Springfield something generic- Everytown, USA.

they avoid saying so on purpose so that everyone can imagine that it is the Springfield in their state. however, many states have been eliminated. in one episode grandpa Simpson said that he would never recognize Missouri. it appears to have an ocean (or great lake) and it snows in the winter. they may one day pin it down by eliminating possibilities.

No one knows thats the beauty of it. Think about it: they have a beach, streets like San Fran, a desert and forests.
