They wanted to stay out of European wars. They stayed out of the first half of both WW 1 and 2. For the 20's the WW1 experience was fresh and they were keen on staying out of future wars.

actually it was none of the above. america at that point was very much an aristocratic society. which is why we hear about the bush's and kennedies. these people wanted to keep their lives the way they were used to since day one and they didn't want to bother with the outside world-they were to busy with their own lives in america

much of the rich didn't want to be involved because their easy life styles were going to be messed with.

it was because of the mass disillusionment caused by WWI, embodied in the work of the "lost generation"
