he becomes a mass murderer (as anti social dudes are stereotyped!) and then shoots himself at the end of his rampage, when they find his body the notebook he always carried was there and it was an in depth reason for doing it (teased, satan told me to, whatever) and the planning behind it... oh and you could have a bully take the notebook as a joke and the guy skitzing out and getting it back, but what if the bully had kept it... hmm could it all have been averted! failing that you could make it an older story, like 17th century torturers diary that some anti social kid finds and gets obsessed with kind of an apt pupil theme

lets call the guy Guy
ok, so Guy carries around a notebook....
SCENARIO ONE: THE OBSERVER
he writes down all his observations about the world
one day, these include a criminal act he's noticed
helps police with information
*mysteriously* vanishes...
a) kidnapped by criminals
b) wasn't really a crime but was staged, so is removed by government
c) WAS the criminal
d) another, probably better option that you will think of
SCENARIO TWO: THE SPY
really a secret agent, notebook = hitech computer/camera, reports on seemingly inocious incidents that are really linked to state-wide terrorism
SCENARIO THREE: THE CAT LOVER
he is on a never-ending quest to find the cat he lost 10 years ago
he really loved that cat
he is sure it is not dead
he goes around following up leads
he has no friends because he moves so often
SCENARIO FOUR: THE CLOSET PSYCOPATH
he is stalking this girl
and that man
and that boy
and that lady
he stalks everyone
but no-one knows
everyday, he picks a new person to stalk and follow EVERYWHERE.
this is because he....
a) is a secret government official
b) wants to 'come out' to his family in Peru, and is preparing evidence to prove that there are lots of gay people out there
c) is really really lonely and shy
d) wants to compile a database for when he plans to be a hired killer so he can have all their details at the touch of a button
e) another of your own suggestions
hope that helps somewhat!

As an unpublished author, I will suggest you consider this. Why is he anti-social? Was he molested, bullied, abused, is he gay? Then ask yourself, why does he scribble in a notebook? Is he plotting revenge, writing poems, designing a weapons system nobody has ever seen before? When you can answer these questions, you then have the plot. If this is an excercise for class, like a course on creative writing or something and you don't know what to do, steal two of my random thirty second thoughts and come up with something. If you are looking to be a writer yourself, you have to know your characters history, so you can determine their future within the framework of a plot. Any other questions, just send an e-mail.

The man is writing about the people he sees every day. His perceptions should deviate from the normal things that are occurring around him. Each person he sees has a different life written by the man then what that person actually is or does. Say a waitress by most standards is typical, he makes her into a goddess. A paperboy, super hero. These people have to be people he comes in contact with so they know him. Getting crazier by the day he begins to believe that these people are actually what he has written.Fantasy and reality get confused.

he is anti-social because he is a closet-superhero and cant let anyone get too near him lest they see that he has webbed feet, and lizard eyes that can see deep, deep underater. He works for the national security agency, and He carries around a notebook to keep in it the names and useful information that he can gather on his 'targets' (which are cleverly disguised as high school students) whos real motive is to undermine the authority of the nation by starting grass-roots movements among the students, thereby developing a rift between youth and establishment.
*whew*
thats gonna be one heckofa good book....
i hope you thank me in your acknowledgment section!
good luck! :)

Maybe the notebook is blank - he carries it around so people think he has something to do, but instead he just watches people.

I say he loses the notebook - after many intriguing entries. Gets picked up, etc., etc.
