Visit the website for the State Bar in your state. There should be a listing available there that will validate it for you.
If there isn't, you can always call the State Bar offices and ask, they will check the directory tell you if they are licensed to practice in the state. The American Bar Association is a voluntary organization and many lawyers don't pay the dues to belong.

Each state has a Bar Association which approves lawyers with a test upon completion of law school (thus "the Bar exam"). So each state should have a Bar website where all the lawyers that were certified by the Bar Association are listed, along with their history of practice. Google your state's name followed by "Bar Association" and then look up a link to a lawyers' directory. Or, if you can't find that, then call the Bar directly.
