Now that Elvin Jones has passed, I would have to say that the jazz drummers playing in NYC are the best I've heard.
Dafnis Prietro and Ari Hoenig are my favorites. If real jazz was mainstream, these guys would be super famous.
A previous answer mentioned Dave Weckel. I saw him once. He is really amazing. I wasn't a big fan of the music though.
