Yes it is true...in many cultures, the woman's clitoris is removed so she has no sexual pleasure, and will be less likely to cheat on their husbands.
There was a book written by Alice Walker entitled "Possessing the Secret of Joy" that tells a story about a woman that has lived through it and wants to stop the cycle.

That's not exactly true. The practice of "female circumcision" is not actually circumsicion. That's just a euphemism.
First of all, there is nothing different between women in Africa and women here. We are all the same.
Second, the practice is now called female genital mutilation. It IS absolutely true that in some cultures it's customary to ensure that a woman will never enjoy sex by removing the clitoris and otherwise mutilating her body. This is very painful, dangerous, and unfortunately, not as uncommon as you might think. I'm sure you can do a quick Google search to find dozens of organizations devoted to ending this practice.
But it should in no way be mistaken for a counterpart to male circumcision.

female circumcision is actually removing the hood over the clitoris, not the clitoris itself. which always seems to be misunderstood by the american media. It is a cosmetic procedure that is not illegal in the states or australia. however what is done in africa IS NOT female circumcision. It is clitorectomey and/or laberectomy.
Honestly how many people answer questions without having a clue on it.
circumcise means cut around.
circum - around, cise - remove.
REAL female circumcision only removes the hood covering the clitoris, similar reasons to male circumcision.
Stated by women on american sex forums that it enhances sexual pleasure and hygiene.

In Africa the practice is to cut off the woman's clitoris which basically makes it impossible for them to enjoy sex. The theory being if you can't enjoy sex why lose your virginity any sooner than you have to. Their private parts are probably about the same sizes of every one elses. This act is illegal in the United States.

i live in indonesia but i am a hindu buddhist. nearly all my friends are muslims. i was in java for a few months and used to sit with a family who lived near the railway track. they had a very lively and intelligent daughter in 5th grade. over a long period of time she began to sit more with the adults and chime in on the conversations from time to time. an older man then suggested that she should be "sunat" circumcised because she was getting too disrespectful. The parents later asked me my opinion. i answered that she was simply growing up and wanted to be accepted as an adult. the parents agreed with me fortunately and the girl was not cut. they said that a lot of people had it done to their daughters at about age 9,10 or 11 but her mother had not had it done. they said that people thought it made their daughters more polite.

It is absolutely true. The reasons differ based upon your personal perspective. The reasons you provided sound as if they are given by defenders of the practice. Most westerners, me included, find the practice barbaric. The "circumcision" involves cutting off the female clitoris. As one can imagine, sexual pleasure is greatly reduced. Medically there is no argument I have heard in support of the practice. Female Africans do not have significantly larger sexual organs than Eur-asian females. And there is not a hygeine argument that can be made as in male circumcision.

First of all the reason you were told is wrong
Their lips are cut off and then sewn shut...(more or less)
Only a small hole is left for urine
that way when the girl is sold off to marriage the man is garunteed that the girl is a virgin.

it is true that girls are circumcised....the reason behind it to my knowledge though is that they remove the clitoris so sex is not enjoyable and they remain pure......sick
