What sort of disk clean up are you attempting?
Many Disk clean ups make backups and result in doubleing the number of files rather than reduceing the number.
For every file reference a Virus checker and Spyware checker may need to expend resources.
After verifying that you really want to clean up your disk do the following
Disconnect your computer from the internet. Pull the cable from the back or unplug the wireless router if you go that way.
Turn off your virus and spyware software
Empy your trash
Start Internet Explorer, tools tab, Delete Cookies, delete files, Settings, amout of disk space to be used should be less than 100 meg, use a low number of days of history ... 2 or 3 is usually good. Apply Close and Close internet explorer
Start -> Programs -> Assories -> Cmd Prompt
Enter the following commands
c:\
del *.tmp /s /q
exit
Restart your virus checker and spyware checker ... this is a good time to run a full scan by the way.
Shut down
Reenable network connections
Reboot
It is very possible that there are other issues with your machine besides needing to do a disk clean up, for example too much stuff running at start up.
Also note that most laptop disk drives spin at 4500 rpm as compared to most desk tops drives that run at 7800. in addition laptop drives tend to have much less cache than the desk top counter parts. Doing a mass disk operation on a lap top usually takes several times longer than a corresponding operation on a desk top.
You can also do the clean up from safe mode (even less will be running in the back ground. Remember PHYSICALLY disconnect from the Net first then disable virus and spyware services, do your thing, Reenable Spyware and Virus protection. Shut down, reconnect to the internet, start up.
In safe mode one normally can not run a full virus and spyware scan

You probably have two much junk running on your laptop while disk cleanup is trying to work. You need to delete all the stuff you don't need from add/remove programs first. Norton can be a real pain when it sees software trying to delete multiple files too. Shut that down. Go to start/run and type msconfig and hit enter. In the startup tab uncheck all of the boxes that look like stuff you don't need. Uncheck them all if you want. Windows will still work and you can go back and recheck anything you need for some program or other.
Disk cleanup might take a while the first time.
