Only 13 and setting goals! Good for you!

You need good grades all through school. They do not have to be perfect, but you want to get into a decent college. Find a college with a good pre-med program. You will do four years of undergraduate work in college and get a bachelors degree.

Then you will do post-graduate work at a medical school.... internship, etc.

A well-rounded student is a good thing. Play a sport, join a club, do community service such as charity work. It all looks good on a resume and college application.

With good grades, when you get into high school, you will have opportunities to join honor societies. These often have scholarships for college and look great on your application and resume. Join them if you qualify!

Student government is a good thing too.

Now, everything together may take up too much time. Choose the things you are interested in and be a leader.... get voted president or at least some position high in the group. Looks good on an application or resume.

If this is really your dream, don't let anyone, even your mom dissuade you.

I'm 47 yrs old. No one in my family ever went to college. I started in my 30s and it took me 13 yrs to get a bachelor's degree. I was a single mom by then and did it the hard way. No one told me HOW to do it, and I had to fight my way through. But I DID graduate! And now I am working on a master's degree in business administration.

Don't give up on your dream. Set goals and plan ahead. You cannot be lazy and get to be a surgeon. Study hard all through school, and especially HEALTH and BIOLOGY (any biological science you can take) courses. That will give you a good start, even before college.

Best Wishes and God Speed!

Sue

I've met a lot of doctors who are pretty "average", and what you are like at 13 doesn't necessarily reflect what you will be like when you are 30, so while I don't like to tell young people not to listen to their parents, that is probably the best advice I can give you in this case. What you do need to do is to make sure that you work hard to get really strong grades, especially in things like math and science, because there is a lot of competition to get into good colleges and medical schools, and if your performance is not among the better ones, your options could be limited. That doesn't mean you have to be a nerd, because a lot of good students have other interests as well. After high school, you should plan to go to college, and the better your grades, the better the college that you can get into. There are a number of things you could study in college (I know pre-med students who study biology, and those who study psychology), but if your college has a pre-med advisor, they will make sure you are taking the courses you need to get into medical school. You then need to take an exam called the MCAT, and if your scores and grades are high enough, to go to medical school for four more years after college. Then you would be doing a lengthy residency, which is practical training to become a surgeon (if you've seen the show Grey's Anatomy, it is about surgical residents). In short, it is a long, long road to become a surgeon, but if you really want it, and not just the money that comes with it, you can probably do it. Good luck!

You have to be very determined and work very very hard. Don't except anything less than the best from yourself. Always, meet a challenge head on because to become a surgeon may be the biggest challenge of your life. Most importantly, never listen to anyone who has anything negative to say about your abilities. You can be anything you want to be and no one has the right to tell you otherwise. Always strive to be better than the next person, strive for knowledge...it's sad, but quite frankly you'll need to be better than the next person, as a female. Just stay positive and refuse to take no for an answer...four years at a university, then four years of medical school will require you to stay positive!!

you don't have to become a nerd. but you do have to study very hard. when you are in high school make sure that you talk to your counselor so you get into the right classes so you can become a surgeon. also try and volunteer at a hospital over the summer, or take a daycare class at school, so you understand the human body better.

Just do your best to realize your dreams and work hard enough to achieve them. You don't have to be the best In your class, you just need to be good enough to earn the credentials. There are plenty of doctors and surgeons practicing that were B and C students. Great grades don't make you a great doctor. Integrity and commitment do that. They're are even some D student out there but they generally work out of the country or for cruise ship lines and as "company" doctors.

We'll that's really good that you are in accelerated classes. That just means your smart and your above average. No, you don't need to become a nerd to be a doctor there are many other people who are just "average" and become excellent doctors.
