I can remember as a teenager in the 50s and 60s we went to the soda shop and had sodas and floats. but I can't remember what the difference is.

Sodas are made with soda water and flavor... floats are made with different flavor based drinks... Coke, rootbeer, etc.

top make a proper Soda you add a little of the ice cream to a little soda watter and mix it up good to a thick liquid state then you add the ice cream and then add, carefuly, more soda water.

A soda is a coke or some kind of soft drink. Floats are when you pour the soda over ice cream, like root beer floats.

soda was just a regular carbonated drink and the floats had a scoop of ice cream in them

A float has ice cream in it, a soda is plain.

put a scoop of ice cream in a soda and VIOLA, you have a float....I grew up in the 50's too...remember phosphates, cherry cokes? ah the good old days......

yep floats mean when there's a big chunk of ice cream "float"ing in the juice.
