shop around. no one laptop is going to be the best all around. you will have to sacrifice quality for price, or vice versa.

DON'T let them talk you into any special packages, tell them you want an empty laptop, with the best operating system, a word processor program, calculator, dictionary, thesaurus, and a fast internet connection. THIS WILL SAVE YOU MONEY And disk space because they dont add the tens of programs that you will never use.

dell is good because they are easy to customize before they leave the factory, and are decent in price. they also have top of the line quality and service.

the main priorities for a student notebook are function and affordability.

you want one that has enough disk space to save your work. you want a disk drive with a burner, to save info and transfer data, this can also be done with USB stick drives.

You can get Dell for $600 that will serve you just as well as some that cost twice as much. If you're going to make movies or do a lot of cad or graphics you might need something more.
