Take it a step further. Does anyone really believe that the government does not think of Americans as stupid lambs that will believe what they are told to believe? I’m going to go a little Michele Moore but are there people out there that believe the government would not do something to its own citizen to gain more power? Careful it’s documented, they have done it. No not 9/11, but lets not get started on that. I am not looking for the nuts to answer this I am looking for people who have a good argument. I am starting to really distrust our government and don’t believe they do anything that does not help them selves.

For an example how about the Patriot act. No, that is not he example I was talking about in my question. I was talking about the document that was just declassified from the Cuban missile crisis, where a general actually told the President we should bomb one of our own ships (with everyone on it) to get the public behind the thought of going to war. Scary, but true. 9/11 anyone?

If the government is for the common people, then it would never divide them and would be true to their will alone.
As it is now, even in America, government divides the people, controls them, and ignores their protests overall. Sometimes, when the protests are loud enough, it either says, "Shut up!" or it says, "Settle down. I know you don't like this, but it is for your good. And if it makes you feel any better, we'll find a scapegoat for us, errr, you."
The government is for whoever is in power as they advance their own agendas and fight for greater power for themselves as an agent of government, therefore empowering government itself.
I must give you credit in your doubt of government motives, but I hope that you don't go all "conspiracy theory" extreme on us like so many people following your path typically do. Sure there are secrets, but government doesn't deserve that much credit (for hiding aliens and UFO technology, or conspiring with terrorists for 9/11, etc, etc).

You always need to distrust the Government, it is the only way to try and keep them reasonably honest.
Having said that, we get the Government we deserve. Unfortunately, the vast majority of people are, and remain, totally ignorant of Government AND everything else that is happening in the world. Hence most people cannot answer the simplest of questions on the street about current affairs, or prominent people - Go ahead, try one!.
Even most people who vote have no clue what they are doing. How many people do you know that vote one way or the other just because that is what their parents do, follow the "herd" instinct!.
So you see, most people are like lambs and "do what they are told" instead of researching the matter and deciding for themselves. That fact can all too easily be taken advantage of by the so-called "politician" - and it is!.
We ALL need to wake up and handle voting responsibly, or don't vote at all!.

I think the first thing you have to look at is the fact that we under a government that is divided into two parties - that don't get along. They stay so busy trying to cut each others' throat, that you really don't get to the big picture. How can you put trust in a system that is constantly attacking itself?
Over years, I have lost faith in our government, because they make mistakes and can't own up to it like they expect everyone else to. I can go into how I feel about the war and all that other crap, but in the end, they are the ones that are granted the power and they are the ones who make the decisions. So, no matter how you feel about it, until you get into a position of power the only real option you have is to put up your protest signs and pray.
Hopefully, one day, the government can pull the knife out of its own back.

We have a system that has developed into the best politics that money can buy. It is now driven by contributions from corporate and other special interest groups who donate to politicians and their causes. As we are unwilling to force this to change, we are getting what we deserve in a way. That anything is done on our behalf, that is in the interest of the common good, is surprising. To distrust is a good start, and to get much better informed is our obligation if we don't want to be sheep led to the slaughter. It is darker and more sinister than your question suggests you know. We all have to go down this road to getting informed. Keep at it, for everything you need to know is there for the researching.

I think its a mix. At the top of the house, the politicos are there to serve their own needs and ideals. At some level I think people on both sides of the aisle are trying to do "something" for their constituents. If they go to far out of wack, they'll get voted out or at the extreme there will be a rebellion. There's also tons of special interest stuff going on. At the end of the day, I think they'll try to get away with whatever they can to reach what they want to reach and keep the masses at bay.
And of course, we all know that think gets totally screwed up once you get inside the DC beltway.
So what's your example of gov doing something to gain more power?

One thing people forget...we are the government! Those elected to office are not our leaders, they are our representatives. So it is up to us...we the people... to make sure they represent us not the corporations. Get active, call your Congressperson or Senator, write letters to the editor.
