my friend keeps telling me that im not going to get into college. i've been on honor roll all freshman year and missed high honor roll by like .5 or 1 point. my grade point average is about a 90 or 89. is that really that bad? i dont play sports because im not a sports oriented kind of person but i do 3 clubs including the newspaper club (business section), key club (helping community), and spanish club just as an extra. i dont understand why my friend keeps telling me this. is it that necessary to play a sport?

No, it's not necessary to play a sport. That's nonsense. Your grade point average is excellent and you are participating in various clubs. It sounds really good to me. Of course you'll get into college. Colleges consider many things when accepting students. Although you are a sophomore you can start learning about the college process and what the colleges expect. Try collegeboard.com. And don't stress it. You have time. Keep focused. Don't listen to them. I bet you are doing better than they are. =]

No it's not necessary to play a sport unless you are counting on a sports schlorshop. Don't leave out volunteer work and other community services. Help at a soup kitchen or homeless shelter. Colleges are looking for well rounded students. You may want to write to colleges you are interested in and ask them what kind of students they are looking for. It is way to soon to be thinking you won't get into college. Your grades are good! Go for it!!

No, sports are not necessary. What colleges look for is a prospective student that has decent grades, is motivated and they like those involved in outside activities, i.e. the school newspaper, theater club, community service, church organizations/clubs, etc. If your grades are like you say and you keep them up, you'll be fine. (You only need top 1% grades if you are trying to get into very prestigous schools like Brown, Penn, Harvard, etc.) Tell your friends to mind their business and worry abour their own admission to college.

P.S.: Maybe you should think about surrounding yourself with more positive and encouraging friends.

You will get into college. I know people who got into decent university with a C+ or B grade point average......jut keep up on decent grades and stay involved in clubs. You do not need sports. Colleges will really like the clubs you are currently in!

Since when is their a g.p.a. of 89 or 90. I've heard of 4 but that is not the point, your smart but maybe this isn't a real question so it doesn't matter. Although colleges do like kids who play sports.

You sound like you are doing just fine in school, and it is not a requirement to play sports to get into college. Alot of people who do play sports may not necessarily be admitted to a college or university. Do apply for scholarships at www.fastweb.com and apply for government grants through financial aid when it is time for you to go. You sound smart and intellectual enough to get in - maybe they are afraid because perhaps it is them who may have trouble being accepted, not you.

Sounds like your friend is either jealous or is not really your friend.

I went to college with people who had lower GPAs and fewer activites than you have.

And, no, sports are NOT that crucial to getting into school. For some people, that is their best option for a scholarship, but there are plenty of academic and leadership scholarships for the less athletic.

If this is your first year in high school then I wouldn't really worry about it. You still have 3 years to do extra curricular activities. Colleges tend to focus on the overall person not only what they do in high school. Get a good score on your ACT or SAT and you're going to get into a great school.

Something like 55% of colleges in the USA accept every single applicant. Don't worry it and find some time to have fun!
