I am not Native American but would like to share with you the texts that helped me to better understand the Native American culture and my understanding of the atrocities that occurred. Many Native Americans were killed, raped, starved, displaced and betrayed by the settlers to America. The quote from Chief Red Cloud above is probably the simplest and most accurate way to portray the betrayal of his people.

Many tribes were reduced to a minisclule fraction of thier numbers in mass masacres (in which only the white men had rifles) - the most famous of these was the massacre at Wounded Knee. Eventually the tribes in thier dwindling numbers were resigned to reservations and virtually starved because of the fact that they now had only limited hunting lands and the settlers had slaughtered (almost to extinction) the buffalo - which was the Native Americans staple food source. A very similar thing happened here in Australia to our Aboriginal tribes.

There is so much to know on this topic and I would advise looking into these:

"Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee" by Dee Brown (book)

"Savagery and the American Indian" by Ken Kirby (film documentary)

and checking out this web site for any more documentaries on your Native People.

You will not only learn of the atrocious behaviour of an ignorant government through this but will hopefully discover a culture which is rich in warmth, respect and mysticism.

Yes the white race are ruining the planet. Or so it would seem. Clearly we are not the only race to have practiced genocide though.

I think the original Aryans from India adopted a practice of categorizing people by class that caught on with the Romans. But well before that was the Egyptians and the Assyrians. So maybe it is as old as civilization.

I tend to think of it as an illness, to put others down, killing, stealing, torture, etc. I see the seeds of it in the modern corporate cultures, and I see it in the old agrarian cultures that are quickly dissapearing. I see it in the churches and in the bars and in the universities.

Everywhere I look I see selfishness, intolerance and abuse. How do we put an end to it? Be careful you don't inspire more hate when you speak of past abuses. It is a raging wildfire that will take both enemies and loved ones alike.

I believe in unconditional acceptance. Can it be taught to these abusers?

The quote is not there so I can't answer this except yes white folks back in the wild west pioneer days were idiots but I think it's b/c the President didn't really have many honest men to tell him the truth about the Native American's treatment. If he had then the whole history might have been much better.

Answer:

If you read your history you would have read that when the whites showed up in North America they considered the indigenous population savages. They first befriended them and then started killing them, and forcing them off of their lands in order to make way for more whites to show up. They took to their new occupation with zeal because they weren't actually killing human beings; just savages so they thought.

The whites after getting enough land, they took a break and made some treaties with the Indians insuring them that they won't mess with them or their land, but then more whites showed up and the population went back to killing and participating in forced relocation.

For the natives, life was pretty bad and getting worse. The whites kept making treaties and then breaking them and taking more and more and more away from the natives to the point where, for a awhile, the whites heavily engaged in genocidal activities wiping out a good number of tribes until some religious people put a stop to it, but by then the natives of each tribal group had, had enough, so they started to band together and started to fight back. This decision didn't go over well with the whites

By then The flood of white occupation was like a tidal wave, and unfortunately for the natives, the whites were pushing north and west at a rapid rate with native tribes fighting them all the way. Needless to say, the natives lost, and ended up in reservations.

They lost everything.

What the whites of the past did was lie, rape, murder, commit genocide, gave disease, and brought misery to a large group of people through forced relocations, and stole their land away from them at the point of a gun.

All of this is in history books.

I feel so much of the ones are simply experiences. I've recognized one million guy to have Native blood tested with a DNA experiment and it used to be usually bred out of him. A lot of grandmothers like to inform their kids their side Indian. Especially the ones grannies who put on the ones tacky shirts with an a giant Indian head on it with a wolf or whatever within the history. For anything unusual motive they desire they had been side Indian.

The US Government and Native People signed the treaties, and the government made good to break each and every one of them.

Or something thereof......

Of course, if you talk to practically any redneck about how indigenous people have suffered in the last 500 years since Columbus' arrival, they'll probably shrug and tell you that's what they get for bombing Pearl Harbor........

ADDENDUM: Hey, looks like some rednecks discovered this question already! I can smell brain cells frying as they try to articulate their viewpoint........

The US government is out to screw over anyone it can, the native American people just happened to be first on the list. So far, the government has also screwed over blacks, whites, asians, latinos,.... come to think of it, the government has pretty much screwed over everyone of every ethnic background.

They have decimated my whole culture and even tried to take away my language but we have managed to hang on. Also they are trying to take away our right to hunt our traditional food and also in the process of taking away our natural resources for their own greed. Everywhere the white people go they bring distruction in their wake and leave it totally decimated and barren...and leave their garbage for us to deal with...They rob our graves for bones and artifacts in the name of history....They take our women for their pleasure and impregnate them for us to raise....and become half breeds which were shunned in the past...What is next total destruction....Sad..very sad...

Of course no one points out that the Indians were killing each other way before the "white man" got here.
