I lost a lot of $ last season doing that. I was in a very poorly insulated house... and my central heater bombed on me. I had a newborn baby at the time so we purchased 2 space heaters & kept the main room warm & the bed room where we slept. Our main heat was out for a month before we just replaced the whole unit.
Lets just say that was the WORST bill I could have imagined.
At teh time I was a stay at home mom & had one running all the time.

If you just want to heat a room for a few hours in the afternoon & use an electric blanket while you sleep I imagine your bill wouldn't turn out like it did for me.

In the short, space heaters are cost effecient if used sparcley & heat isn't a major concern... but if you need constant heat & steady temps use your central. don't turn it off either... becuase it takes the most energy to warm it from really cold temps than it does to maintain a warmer room.

Using a portable heater in a single room closed off to the rest of the house certainly is more economical than heating the whole house. The purpose of a portable is to provide "spot" heating where needed, not for general heating tasks.
