Can anyone tell me how I can connect 2 pc' directly together via network cards. Do I need a CAT5 crfossover cable, or is there another way to connect them. I want to transfer files from one pc to the other, but nothing has worked so far

LAN, it's easy and wireless. You just have to make the computers use the same Workgroup in the control panel. Then, you need to share a folder or printer or something so that you can access the computer.

You got the right cable, you will need to set up file and print sharing, you will also need to run your networking wizard.
