Sara...if I may, I'd like to explain why a company can be very legitimate but require a start-up fee. I've been reading these boards tonight and am concerned with how a "start-up" cost can be interpreted.
For one thing, it separates those who truly want to work and own their own businesses from those who do not. In many cases, a small fee to begin a business will show commitment. If the business were free, then everyone would have one - many of who would not be serious, business-minded people.
Secondly, you're actually NOT paying to work for someone else...you're starting your own business. You own the business. You make the profit. You decide your future and plan your schedule.
I can only speak intelligently on the Company I work with...Mary Kay. I'm a Sales Director and have been in the business for 10 years. To start in our Company you must purchase a $100 starter kit. It's actually valued at over $500...but the Company keeps the start-up cost minimum so almost anyone could start their own business, and work their own business. Work is the word. MK is not a get-rick-quick-scheme. You actually have to work. But when you do, you do make very good money.
So, I just wanted to explain WHY there is a start-up cost and hope that you understand you are not paying to work for MK. I can't speak about other companies...but I know that is true of ours.
Best of luck to you - and I wish you all good things! Cathy

I'm flagging (for abuse) those posts that list the various web-based scams in response to this question.
I work from home. At least, my office is in my home. I take care of the computer systems for small businesses, and I find that the best way to be profitable is to work from a spare bedroom.
I'm thinking that there have got to be jobs out that that, with the help of a phone line and a high-speed data line, could have you working from home at least 2-3 days a week. This would be possible if you have some tangible skills -- for instance, can you do accounting? Can you do insurance claims? If there is an office job in a company, there is a case to be made to let the person work from home.

One of the first things I would recommend that you do is start thinking about your interests/passions... and go into an internet business that is based on that. Why? Because it makes the work a lot easier.
Answering the following questions should help you develop ideas:
1) what websites do you visit when you're just surfing online?
2) do you have pets?
3) do you play and sports?
4) do you collect anythings?
5) do you have any specialized education?
See what I mean....
After that, you've got to decide the business model that you want to use - do you want to develop you own product or do you want to be an affiliate marketer (market other peoples products)?
Then you've got to learn basic skills such as building and uploading websites, setting up autoresponders, setting up a merchant account to take orders, etc.
And then, probably the most important part... you have got to learn how to market you business. If your interested in starting up your own internet business, then I would like to recommend either one of the following great resources:
if you don't have much experience with computers and the Internet - http://www.affiliatemarketinglessons.com/warpspeedwealth.html
If you have good experience with computers and the Internet - http://www.affiliatemarketinglessons.com/IS2006.html
Be sure to check out the money back guarantees ...you simply cannot loose. They can offer such guarantees because of their success rate...
If your interested in affiliate marketing (marketing other people's products/services) then you'll want grab a copy of this book - http://www.affiliatemarketinglessons.com/superaffiliate.html
If your interested in joining an existing internet business, then I would recommend SFI Marketing Group (http://affiliatemarketinglessons.com/SFI.html). I would recommend that you join this opportunity either way because 1) its Free and 2) you'll learn a lot through their training.
Anyways, I hope this helps... and I wish you much success.

There are companies out there that are real and if they charge a fee that is small for your work at home supplies, like under $40 or so I would say that's fair. Also if it has a money back gaurantee.
or companies with no fee at all but if you are asked to pay large up front fees you are right to stay away from them.
There are 2 that have been around a long time and my mom and wife are having success with them.
1. You can check out http://www.anybodycandothis.com or
2. Instant info at http://www.entertheconference.com
Both fall into your criteria

Unfortunately, most of the online work-at-home things being advertised are ponzi schemes which will only work if you sucker other people into signing up like you were suckered into signing up and paying a bunch of money. There are SOME telecommunting jobs, but I'd be very wary of anything that required me to pay any money up front, or anything that says "Anyone can make lots of money doing this."
