Most PC files have extensions so that your computer knows how to use each file. Uusally the extension also tells the computer what icon to use for that particular file..
A "wad" file uses a ".WAD" extension. a "text" file has a ".txt" extension, etc, etc.

I seem to recall that the Doom Wad file is named
Doom.wad

The main program is named:
Doom.exe
(the "exe" extension means "executable".. so that's the Doom executable file.. that's the one that IS the program "doom", and loads everything... it's probably the one that's crashing, telling you to look for the .Wad file, if it hasn't been put in there yet.)

An noted in the other person's answer, you can change your system so that it shows the file extension. Doing that won't change anything, or change how anything is run, it'll just let you see the full filename. So, instead of just several files in that doom directory being called:
Doom
Doom
etc..
With different icons,

They'd then show up as:
Doom.wad
Doom.exe
etc..
with different icons.

Which makes them easier to tell apart, obviously..

Best of luck to you. Don't pick mine as the best answer, choose the one that gave you the steps to turn-on your extensions and then look for the "doom.wad" file.. that's really all you need to know abou it. I just wasn't sure if they'd answered in a way that you'd understand, and figured I'd help out.

The wad files should be files that end with the extension "wad".

Click on your My Computer icon
Click on Tools
Select Folder Options
Click the View tab
You should see a choose in the list that appears that says "Hide Extension for known file types". Make sure that is UNCHECKED
OK out of the Options window

Go to the start button and select Search
Do a search for All Files and Folders
Where it ask for all or part of a file name, type in: *.wad
Click search and it will find all the wad files for you
Copy them to the folder where you need them
