What do you think is the function of education? Is it to memorize facts so you can gain more and more knowledge? Is it to help you gain skills for a future career? Or is it to help you think for yourself and understand life rather than know life? Or is it something else? What do you think?

Education should provide ways to learn and to know--to offer students the opportunity to develop language and critical thinking skills. Memorization is out. Career skills are out (unless you are at a technical or trade school). A comprehensive study in the art of rhetoric offers the best educational model.

An education does 5 basic things:

#1- teaches you how to learn, and how to search for further information on something if you need to. This includes discipline and how to concentrate, how to be attentive, and retain information that needs to be retained.

#2- teaches you ways in which you can communicate ideas and concepts to others. Not just in terms of writing reports and official business letters, but also in basic communication and interaction with other people.

#3- Teaches you basic (or advanced) facts that you may find useful later on. I currently work at a job where I'm using all kinds of mathematics on a daily basis. I recall at school that I was convinced I'd NEVER need to know anything about even basic math because I had access to calculators. If I hadn't learned it anyways, I'd be unable to do my job right now and would probably be flipping burgers somewhere. The biggest part of advanced math isn't about knowing the answer, it's about knowing how to get there.

#4- Exposes you to a lot of various things that you may discover you're interested in and may not otherwise be exposed to. Literally giving you more power with which to direct and focus the rest of your life.

#5- Gives you the oppourtunity to make mistakes in an environment where it's not going to really mess you up, and allows you to see the errors of others, and potentially learn from everyone's mistakes, especially your own. This also includes history lessons where you can see the power of ideas, and the results, good or bad. "He who doesn't know his history, is destined to repeat it".

Futhermore, a good student doesn't learn the answers to their life, but learn what questions they must ask, how to ask them, where to ask then, and who to ask, to better themselves, and hopefully those around them.

Everything the posters have said and I learned one new thing in one of my education classes. The number one purpose of education in America is to teach patriotism, especially in elementary school.
