Dual Layer recording allows DVD-R and DVD+R discs to store significantly more data, up to 8.5 Gigabytes per disc, compared with 4.7 Gigabytes for single-layer discs. DVD-R DL was developed for the DVD Forum by Pioneer Corporation, DVD+R DL was developed for the DVD+RW Alliance by Sony.

hi, funny coincidence,i have just bought a dual layer dvd rw today so i should be able to answer your question
a dual layer dvd is basically a dvd writer that can burn up to 8gb on one disc,a normal dvd can hold 4.7gb so dual meaning two means 2 x 4.7gb = 9.4gb
to take advantage of the dual layer capability you need to buy dual layer discs, which can be bought from any decent computer shop, and then use a compatible peice of burning software such as nero or ashampoo
so buy a dual layer disc, download or buy the nessecary software and then burn te disc...job done

a standard single layer dvd burner will burn upto 4.7Gb of uncompressed data. the newer dual-layer burner will give you upto 9Gb of data.

most dvd movies run at about 8 to 9 Gb so if you wanted to burn one of these to a single layer dvd you would have to compress the move down to that size. the Dual-layer dvd means you no longer need to compress the move, or remove features, you can burn the complete file.

This is a dvd burner that writes on both sides of the disk. Usually used to write EXTREMELY large files. I'm talkin about the files that are in excess of 10 GB.
