i started driving at 21! last year because i was petrified of it myself. what got me to do it is i had ot go to college and it was 30 min away and taking the bus was definitly out of the question...if it's a phobia you might want to go talk to a counselor..there is nothing wrong with you, people are different from one another...dont worry hopefully you'll get there!

When I was just 2 years old my family and I were in a wreck against a precut lumber truck that was overloaded on Hwy 101 in Ore. Granted this left me to a life in a wheelchair, but that has not slowed me down one bit. I driven muscle cars at speeds over 170+ and other cars down the 1/4 track in 10 seconds, jumped out of a plane at 10k feet, piloted a glide plane, driven a Honda Pilot ATV to places that I could never gotten to and appreciated had I let FEAR get in the way. FEAR (False Evidence Appearing Real). Do you sit at the edge of the pool and slide on in when ready or just plunge in. I guess you got to ask yourself are the places you want to go in life worth the risks, for the answer is YES. Good Luck

If it's any comfort, I'm 31 and never drive. I had a license but I actually let it expire when I moved to another state. I take public transit everywhere and fortunately the city I live has an excellent public transit system. I think cars have had a deterimental impact on the environment, traffic destroys our quality of life, and accidents cause too many deaths and disabilities.

maybe you can start by driving in a very familiar place, your street - have someone you feel comfortable with sit with you, you can also try driving in an empty parking lot - like a church lot on a day other than sunday. you might also want to flip through your cars user manual and learn about your car.

Just get in and drive. I would start in a remote area where there is no one around. And go with someone who is patient and won't make you more nervous.

get your butt in the car BY YOURSELF, turn the radio on listen to your favorite cd and just drive down a country road. theres nothing to be afraid of, and if you get hit or hit someone, you always have insurance!! i used to have dreams that i would drive over a bridgeand land in the water and i do geta little tensed up when i go over one but i just think about something else! or sing, or talk on my cell.

Welcome to the club, but I am worse off, because I love cars, but I dread driving! Cars are such beautifully styled, skilfully made objects, so full of all the expertise of all those hundreds of people involved in making them... but all it takes is one pushy idiot driver behind you on the road to nullify the appreciation.
My advice to you would be, if you are afraid of driving, and if you have the option not to, don't force yourself. There are plenty of other means to get around, and cars are very bad for the environment anyway. But if you must drive, I know this can occur, try this:
First, try to start seeing how beautiful and amazing cars are. Mass-produced objects of art. There are car designers who work for the car makers, you know? People who do nothing but draw cars all day long and build models of them, and to whom there is nothing more fulfilling than the sight of a car, any car, because they are all beautiful somehow, even the cheap ones.
And once you've discovered the beauty and the fascination of the car, try getting a full grip on the dynamicism of traffic. It's all very limited in movement, you see. That perceived chaos out there on the roads is actually not chaos at all, but follows cleverly thought-out rules by which everybody abides (hopefully), and even if you make a little mistake, relax, the other cars are also driven by people, who have an interest in not crashing, so they will do whatever they can not to if you make a mistake. I used to be freaked out by all those rigidly grimacing cars, thinking "man, I'm the only living being out here, everything else is robots", but you need to start seeing the people inside the cars to realize it's just another form of being a pedestrian, but on wheels, and behind glass).
Best of luck.
