Eight, plus three dwarf planets.

well, everyone is going to say 8 plus Pluto, now that Pluto doesn't count any more.

Dava Sobel, the science writer, has just published a nice little book about this that is meant for non-astronomers. "The Planets" check it out at your local library.

There are at least 3 little planetoids (or whatever they are going to call them) counting Pluto and the ones these other guys answered, that are out beyond Neptune, but all the astronomy guys are convinced that we are going to find thousands more, now that we have decided how this whole thing works and are starting to look for them more seriously. So eventually there will be many thousands of "almost planet sized" objects on the list...
The ones that really count, though, are just the inner ones... Mercury, and Mars, and a few outer moons of the gas giants -- the ones that we may actually someday set foot on.

mercury, venus, earth, mars, jupiter, saturn, uranus, neptune, ub313 or zena. The double planet of pluto was declared to be not a planet a while back. so 9 but if a teacher asked u this question if she knows about pluto her answer would be 8. Most people do not know about a planet way out in the kyper belt called zena...its 45 degrees above the plain that all the other planets are located. its 25% larger than pluto and nearly twice as far away.

we use 2 have 9 but since pluto was too small to be in our solar system, we now have 8 planets.
