Ooooh! I love Tartain paint. I usually find it next to the skyhooks and large tins of elbow grease.
Once I was working at a school @ age 17. The supervisior, myself and other workers were washing down desks classroom by classroom.
I was stuck on one that would not come clean.
I asked the supervisor what he thought would work.
"Elbow grease." He replied.
I immediately stopped working and said, "I am off to the shop to get us all some." Then I stood up.
This tall, good spirited boss began belly laughs so hard that it took the others by surprize.
Sadly he had to explain to one of the other workers the point of my joke!

Vaseline or a cream skin lotion when applied to the elbow, could be referred to as "elbow grease" I supose in a very loose casual sense.

Sorry to break it to you, but you can't buy elbow grease. That term refers to the effort you put into a job.
