Depend on what you are asking
If simplifying:
you want to multiply each term in the perentheses by the term on the out side
4(x + 2)
= (4 * x) + (4 * 2) [* means times or multiply by]
= 4x + 8
I the real equation you meant to write is 4(x + 2) = 0 and have to solve for the variable x, then take the same steps and try to get x by it self.
4x + 8 = 0 (from previous explanation)
4x = -8 (subtract 8 from both sides)
x = -(8/4) (divide both sides by 4)
x = -2 (the negative carries down and the 8 divided by 4 is 2)
Tip: remember that whatever you do to one side of the equation you have to do to the other. When I say there are sides to the equation, that means that the equal sign is the middle.
HOPE THIS HELPS!

4(x+2) .. are you trying to simplify this term?
Well, when you have a number put in front of parentheses, that means you have that many of what ever is inside.
Some examples:
4(x+2) is 4 x's and 4 2's... =4x+8.
3(x+5) is 3 x's and 3 5's... = 3x+15.
5(2x+3) is 5 (2x)'s and 5 3's... = 10x+15.
This is called distribution.

If there is a number outside of a parenthesis, and there is a variable, letter, and a number inside the parenthesis, you multiply the number outside by the variable inside and the number outside by the number inside.
so: 4(x+2)
is the same as 4(x)+4(2)
and that equals 4x+8

For increasing cubic binomials the final formula is as follows: (a + b) ^ 3 = a^3 + 3*a^2*b^a million + 3*a^a million*b^2 + b^3 on your case, a is x and b is -y^5 So (x - y^5)^3 = x^3 + 3*x^2*(-y^5)^a million + 3*x^a million*(-y^5)^2 + (-y^5)^3 Simplified: =x^3 - 3x^2*y^5 + 3x*y^10 - y^15 :D

What do you want to know? You've written an expression, not an equation.
Yes, I teach algebra at a state college!
