I,m trying to find a place in Detroit where I can get food for my pantry for thanksgiving. Things have been really bad this year for me and my four children. I am a single working mother of four boys trying to make ends meet, my 17 year old has epilepsy and has been denied social security 4 times. Despite this, he will be walking across the stage for his graduation in June of 2007. I have used all of the money we have this month to pay for his senior package. I would like to have a nice meal for Thanksgiving, Do anyone know of any place in Michigan where I can at least get a free turkey?

Hi Itsy, have you tried contacting Focus Hope, 1-313-494-5500. Try dept. of Human Services-www.michigan.gov/dhs. Try Google-ing Gleaners food bank and Food Bank Council of Michigan.I hope that this will help you and your children.Good luck and keep fighting for your kids. Keep after social security. dayna m

I would suggest you go to your local DSHS and get on food stamps. In most cases you can get them the same day as long as you turn in all the required documents.
There are places that can sponsor your family and buy your whole Thanksgiving dinner. I got that one year when we had moved across the state and the place we had gone to get parenting classes submitted our name and the boys scouts came to our apartment and brought us tons of food. Then for Christmas they did the same thing!!!!
Best Wishes and Good Luck

I'm 4 hours west of Detroit...and in my town we have an Aldi...groceries are very cheap and taste the same..check and see if you have one in your local area. I absolutely agree to check with local churches and the salvation army... there is always people willing to help out! Have a blessed Thanksgiving!

You can go to New Bethel Church, off of Linwood. They are always passing out turkeys. Also call Capuchin, 313-925-0514. They are always helpful. Check out your children's school as well and talk to one of the counselors. FIA is helpful. Some workers pass out baskets Call the United Way as well. They can give you numbers to places in your area. Good luck!

Check your local churches, the Salvation Army, and apply for food stamps. I am recently homeless and I have been to all three for help. The Church of Christ in my area is particularly helpful (no questions asked.)

Go to the Capuchins Soup Kitchen.
They provide food for needy (both on site at their soup kitchen, but also through food baskets).
I pray that your family's needs are met this holiday season.

check in with Children's hospital. They know of alot of different organizations. Check with local schools. Sometimes you may just want to ask around, like to some of your friends. Trust me, somebody knows somebody that knows somebody. Good luck and take care.
