No - you're right it was Dowler not Dowling - they never found her killer - they had a suspicion it may be linked to a spate of rapes and killings though, to an unknown attacker.

Amanda Jane "Milly" Dowler (June 25, 1988 – March 21, 2002?) was a British schoolgirl who was murdered on the way home from school in Walton-on-Thames. Her disappearance in March 2002, followed by the discovery of her remains six months later, resulted in nationwide media attention, a huge police investigation (Operation Ruby) involving over 100 officers at its peak and numerous tributes. The British police received over 6,000 telephone calls, questioned over 2,800 people and made 120 searches. Despite the vast attention to the case, no one has been charged with her murder as of 2006
As of 2006, despite several arrests no-one has yet been charged with Dowler's murder. The only person to appear in the dock in relation to the case was 21-year-old Lianne Newman from Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, who repeatedly phoned Dowler's parents, her school and the police pretending to be the missing schoolgirl. She was jailed in April 2003 for five months after pleading guilty to five counts of making phone calls to cause annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety.

Milly Dowling, I think you mean. I'm pretty sure they haven't found her killer yet.

Sorry - you're right. It was Dowler.
