You have to apply to the CRB, but you cannot just do this on your own intiative - you have to be going for a job where a CRB check is required, and the prospective employer will pay for this to be done.
The amount of time it takes varies. I have known people wait months for enhanced disclosure (which takes longer) so that they are unable to take up their employment, although the CRB's target is 10 days for a standard check and 4 weeks for an enhanced check.

I filled out a form and sent it off (i got the form from work)
But still it took nearly 2 months to get it back...
Have no idea how to speed up the process, but apparently the 'cleaner' you are - the faster it is..
