if they are the same thing then why does it have 2 different names?

They are not the same things. Exhuast pipe goes from your
engine to the end of your car. The muffler sits about one foot
from the end of your car and the remainder is called a tail-pipe.
The muffler reduces the engine noise before its released into
the atmosphere unless its a performance one. Performance
mufflers do next to nothing.

the difference between a exhaust pipe and a muffler? OK the difference is that a muffler is a cylinder that is to help regulate your speed such as if you have a 4 cylinder muffler than you will go as fast as a 2 cylinder or muffler and slower than a 8cylinder or muffler. and exhaust pipe is a pipe were the burnt fuels that are no more in use leaves from OK another if you no what exhaust is than you would no what the exhaust pipe is the other pipe just release fuels. burnt fuels. also a muffler is also helped for nous and all that aw some stuff a muffler and exhaust pipe yes they are different and no they are not the same. also the muffler is just another tail pipe but yet is called the muffler i have a show muffler it shots out flames threw the muffler and it is a arrow dynamic i have no idea what that means but it does some crazy stuff it does this neon light thing that flashes from the muffler and it flashes neon pink, yellow, green, orange, and purple and it flashes black lights also. the muffler on my car is aw some because it is a show car but it is also to shut up my engine or to make it silents.

Both do the same thing as they equalize the pressure in both pipes but the X pipe transfers the exhaust gasses better than the H pipe.

The muffler is the device which muffles the engine noise and collects particles. From the muffler runs the exhaust pipe which is where the exhaust fumes exist the system. They are 2 parts or your exhaust system but are not the same thing.
