Can I use my laptop outside my house. I used it at a family members house 6 miles away and cannot get a connection. My laptop says that the signal strength is low. Is it possible to get a connection from my house, since I have a wireless connection at home? What do I need to do? I know the distance is far, but I figured, in this day and age, this would be easy to do?

Since the maximum range of WiFi is around 300 feet (and effectively much less with walls, interference etc) no - you won't be able to connect to your router back at home. Keep in mind that office complexes that are simply trying to get a signal between 2 floors or across the street, often have to use range expanders or repeaters, and that's a fraction of the distance you're talking about.

You might get a signal from some next-door neighbor to your relatives, or you'd have to consider a different type of broadband service (similar to cellular coverage)

I'm not exactly sure but 6 miles seems to be a bit extreme. Your weak signal is probably hit another access point besides the one at your home. Seems to me 1 mile is about all you'll get from a stock set-up. That's with a clear line of sight, nothing in the way like walls, buildings mountains, etc. There are upgrades available, long distance antennas and the like. do some research before you buy, they can be costly. Good luck.

no you cant, 6 miles as about 6 miles too far

wifi is meant as short range communication, even your mobile phone only has a range of 7.5 miles
