I've only had 2 shots so far, I'm due for my next shot in January. I've actually lost half of my hair.. and I wasn't informed that this was a side effect until I called today. My hair was really thin to begin with and I'm terrified. Are these side effects permanent?? Or will it grow back? Im definitely discontinuing the shot.

One of my friends had this same problem when she was on Depo-Provera a few years back. She said that she literally had entire patches of hair missing on her head. When she asked her doctor about it, he told her that it was one of the side-effects and they would look for an alternative method of birth control for her. It took several months for her hair to start growing back in, but it was still pretty thin. It still is, even now. When she asked her doctor about this months later, he said that sometimes it is reversible after cessation of the Depo shot and may take several months for hair to grow back, and sometimes it's not if genetics are a factor.

I was on the depo shot for 8 years, I stopped taking it about 4 months ago, now all my hair is falling out, it didnt happen while I was taking it, but it is now, I would stop taking it because even if it does stop you will probley have hair falling out when you want to stop. My dr. said it would stop and my hair will grow back.

I have also had that medicine for endometriosis. I had 7 shots in 5 months and my hair started falling out also. But the good news is hair is starting to grow back. Talk to your doc and see if they have some type of meds to help it thicken....

It is one of the acknowledged possible side effects. Call your pharmacy. They have a book called "Facts and Comparisons" that should have the answer you're seeking...
