Not everyone adheres to it? I'd say few adhere to gender roles anymore. It's the biggest reasons our kids are so confused as to what they're supposed to do with their lives, and who they're supposed to be. Men and women do not have the same strengths and weaknesses...so it's unrealistic (read: a fantasy) to think that they can each do what the other can. They can't in some cases...and in other cases, simply not as well as the other. Families work best when parents fill their gender roles and stop prancing about as if their whole life is all about them and what they think they have to prove. That's a selfish attitude towards life, and is reflected in the increase of juvenile violence, sex, pregnancy and irresponsibility. Keep it up, ladies, and you'll all solve the issue by eliminating your genes from the gene pool.

In most cases I'd say that, yes, women do what they want to. And it shows in the results of their lives: unhappiness, delinquency in their children, failed marriages, and spending a lifetime lying to themselves about all of it in order to justify it. I'd say they're the heads of their house more often than not...and their house has no husband, more often than not.

Edit - Note that all this is in the US. There are many other countries in the world where this is not the case.

A woman's role in the United States is anything SHE wants it to be if she has the wisdom to make a choice and do whatever it takes to make it happen.

Women are individuals, so why are you generalizing here?

Anything she wants to be. There are no limits. Think about Nancy Pelosi, Condi Rice, and Hilary Clinton.

yes.
whatever they want to do.
there are still standard expectations
like division of labor
ie women tend to do certain tasks (put away groceries?)
and men tend to do certain tasks (replace the toilet?)
but not everyone adheres and it is not important.

I assume you are not from US. Whatever men can do, women can do in this country.
