the opening windows splash is full screen. screen area (resolution?) is 1024 x 768

If the picture is not filling the entire monitor screen, normally there are buttons on the front (or side) of the monitor you can press that will bring up a configuration porgram. You should be able to use it to expand the picture to fill the entire screen. As it is different for every make and model, i can not be more specific. But usually a couple minutes of trial and error with the buttons and you can get it...

You need to set your resolution higher. The splash screen is put up before the video drivers are loaded and is just a stretched 640 x 480, so it doesn't mean anything. If you have a flat panel screen, you need to set the computer resolution to whatever the panel is made for. It's the only one that will look good.
